Virginity and Completeness of Oneself

Virginity and Completeness of Oneself
The Concept Based on the song “Like A Virgin” from Glee

“...I didn't know how lost I was until I found you. I was beat incomplete. I'd been had; I was sad and blue, but you made me feel shiny and new. Like a virgin, touched for the very first time…”

When you hear this song, maybe you’d feel like dancing to the beat and you end up singing the song. The song really has a nice tune, but did you ever wonder the underlying concept in this song?

The concept of the loss of virginity in order to complete oneself is introduced in this song. A virgin is woman who has not had any sexual intercourse with the opposite sex. Virginity is the state of being virgin. Virginity, in this song, is paired with incompleteness of oneself.

Completeness of oneself usually pertains to the state wherein one is happy and content with oneself. It usually pertains to the state when one is content with the material or immaterial things one has. It may be a state when one has achieved his goals or got everything he/she wanted that one has no need to complain or ask for anything more, material nor immaterial. It may be a state when one already has appreciation, acceptance of oneself. Completeness of oneself actually depends on the person. Different people have different concepts of “completeness”.

According to the lyrics of the song, a person feels complete when one has found somebody to love. For example, a line in the song says that “I didn’t know how lost I was till I found you”. This implies that when somebody finds someone to love it makes one complete. This completeness is connected with the concept of one’s virginity. In the chorus, a line says “Like a virgin, touched for the very first time…” This line describes a virgin who just lost her virginity. This song implies the idea that one is incomplete when a woman is still like a virgin, or still hasn’t got any sexual intercourse with a man. When a woman is “touched for the very first time” or when she loses her virginity and has had sexual activity with a man, she feels good, happy, strong and bold. In the beginning a woman is “beat incomplete” but after a woman is “touched for the very first time”, she no longer feels incomplete. Thus, she must have completeness in herself if she no longer feels incomplete. The bottom line, according to the song lyrics, is that in order to be incomplete, one has to experience sexual intercourse with the opposite sex.

That idea or concept is according to the lyrics, if you look at it that way. But actually, that isn’t always the case. For example, in the episode of Glee where they sang this song, they actually wanted to find themselves and be complete, but in the end they all refused to do it. Maybe, for them this isn’t really what it means to be complete. This idea of completeness may be true for a number of people but it doesn’t really mean that it is true for all. Different people have different views for “completeness” of themselves. The idea that this song is introducing is actually misleading especially to people who still don’t have a concept of “completeness” in themselves. The bad thing is that we sing this song not really knowing what we’re all singing about.

The World When Elise was Born

This is an essay I wrote for my English 10 class. This paper is about the day when I was born. It's a report paper, I think. Enjoy reading. :D

August 15, 1993. While Analiza was in great pain, crying, shouting in a small room in Jesus Delgado Memorial Hospital, giving birth to a 6-lb baby they named Ann Elizabeth, a lot of things were happening in the big world…
August 15 was a special holiday in Korea because it signifies the end of the Japanese colonial rule in Korea (AP, 1993). 100,000 students from Hanyang University rallied for the unification of the Korean peninsula (AP, 1993). However, the students were banned to rally (AP, 1993). In the Philippines, some political organizations ask for reparation and compensation from Japan for the Filipino women who were sexually abused during the Japanese colonization.
What was happening in the world 17 years ago is not much different from what is happening in the world today. Even then, murder cases, kidnapping and hostage were eminent in the Philippine news. Two UP Los Banos students were slayed and raped on June 29 (Esplanada, 1993). A local official named Sanchez was involved in the rape and murder of the two students (Esplanada, 1993). Private armies and jueteng networks were eminent in Calauan, Laguna (Esplanada, 1993). Even in other parts of the country, people were being kidnapped and held hostage. In Agusan del Sur, 11 DENR men were held hostage (De Leon, 1993). In Basilan, another teacher was kidnapped (De Leon, 1993). Luckily, some Basilan hostages were freed by the MNLF (Feliciano, 1993).
Issues on corruption were also prominent in the Philippine government even then.  In Tiwi, a mayor filed a libel suit against a high school freshman student who wrote in her exam paper that the mayor corrupts the money of Tiwi (Calleja, 1993). Luckily, the libel suit was thrown out and instead, the student must be paid damages by the mayor (Calleja, 1993).
Ramos was planning to increase taxes from cigarette firms or what we call now as “sin tax” (Esplanada, 1993). During that time, the president was still planning on how to increase the taxes and many people were still against the increase of taxes for cigarettes.
The issue on commercialization of education is also eminent even during 1993. There was an issue in UP Visayas because the Dean planned to put rental fees on university facilities (PNF, 1993). Many students and constituents disagreed on the Dean’s plan to put rental fees on what was supposed to be free service for the students (PNF, 1993).
Pollution was also a problem even before. Many firms throw toxic wastes in the rivers, particularly the Tunasan-San Pedro River (Allegre, 1993). 30 firms faced legal cases against them because of their improper disposal of toxic wastes (Allegre, 1993).
Natural disasters and calamities troubled the people even then. There were lahar flows and ash clouds triggered by heavy rain in San Fernando, Pampanga (Jimenez, 1993). In Thailand, a high-class hotel collapsed. Royal Plaza Hotel in Korati, Thailand, collapsed on August 13, 1993 (AP, 1993). 100 or more people were trapped when the hotel collapsed (AP, 1993). The theory was that the collapse was partly caused by the addition of the three top floors because the building was still under renovation when it collapsed (AP, 1993).
After 17 years, the 6-lb baby named Ann Elizabeth was big enough to realize that the world when she was born was not much different from the world she is living in now. More students were still rallying about rights, commercialization of education, particularly in UP. Murder cases were still eminent, and it even worsened; as worse as the Maguindanao massacre. There is still no true peace between the MNLF and the government because people were still being kidnapped and hostaged. Corruption is very much a large issue. However, students are more free to write about corrupt officials now without being accused with libel. Sin tax is now large and other taxes are about to rise. Pollution is even worse with the increase of cars and smoke belchers in the country. Natural calamities also became worse because of global warming. There are floods like Ondoy, heavy rains, strong storms, earthquakes, tsunamis, and many more. In general, the world, particularly the country, is getting worse… There hasn’t been a great change that could surpass the worsening scenario of the country. 2010 is a special year. Let us hope that with the change of leaders and the citizen’s help, we could have a great change in the government and in the country.

Digital Eye Camera

My English 10 concept paper. Maam Liway asked us to create a concept paper by creating a concept of a product you want to invent or sell in the class. I forgot what the instructions were. So, I wrote this paper. Yes,  I crammed. Then, when we came to class, Maam Liway asked us to sell this products to the class. She said that we should build a clear concept of the product we wanted so that we could sell the product. We must be able to describe the product clearly. Well... I think my concept is a bit of a blur.

Now You're Back Again.

"And now you're back from outer space. I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face."

-- I Will Survive, Gloria Gayner

It took me so long to forget those but it took you a minute to type those words and put them back in my mind again.

I hate this feeling. It took me so long to forget those awful memories... or maybe not so awful. I wasn't able to talk to you for so long just to forget those bitterness and painful memories I have of you. It took me so long not to talk just to be able to bid you a nice goodbye. I wanted to give you a happy goodbye. I didn't want to be sad. I avoided to talk about the silly past. I avoided it. I thought I was able to forget about it, I thought I was able to move on.

But well, no. You came from outer space and talked to me once more. I wanted to talk to you. But you wanted to talk about silly things from the past, things that I might miss because you're gone. And so I remembered our past, our memories. And from my very honest heart, I admitted. I couldn't say no when I really missed them.. I really missed those things... But not all. I missed those "stuff that I missed", but only those. You might have wondered if I missed more? Sorry, but I do not miss those. Its too painful to remember those. I have said my piece. Lets stop talking about that crap.

Now, I still want to ask you. I still want to ask you why you did those. Still, you tell me nothing. Still you tell me that there is no reason. Honestly, I would rather accept that you did those because you wanted to, rather than telling me that there is really no reason. I feel like a worthless toy for a person with no heart. I feel like I'm just there when you want me, but if you don't need me you just throw me away. You don't even care.

So what am I now? Just your toy? Even a toy deserves to be loved.

If you're not going to tell me anything, if you're just going to play with me, go on and go. Go without even saying goodbye.

At least, without you, I should be at peace...

But thinking back, I am not at peace without you. I realized that I'm sad that you went away. But maybe, I am sad because there is no proper goodbyes.

I really have one wish right now.

I really want to understand... Understand why... understand you.

But I guess I really can't.

This blog is not necessarily real. This might just be fictional. Maybe these just came from my imagination. I just want to write these words down... or type.. :p
